Does Canary detect text messages on iPhone?
Due to security restrictions on the iPhone platform, Canary is not able to detect text messages. However, we can detect when your child unlocks their phone in order to answer a text or use an app.
Can Canary auto-respond to texts for me?
Yes, on Android. Due to security restrictions on the iPhone platform, Canary is not able to automatically reply to messages on your teen’s behalf on iPhones.
Does Canary read my texts/phone logs?
Canary doesn’t read any of your private data, it merely observes when an event occurs.
Do subscriptions auto-renew?
Subscriptions will never expire.
Can my teen disable Canary, send a text, and re-enable it without me knowing?
Canary requires a password in order to disable it or access settings. However, we cannot prevent your teen from uninstalling the app. If our systems haven’t heard from your teen’s device in 15 hours or more Canary will send you an alert. Your teen can’t set Canary back up on his or her device without your account info and password, so temporary removal is not an option. If your teen has your Canary password then he or she can disable the app for periods of time without your knowledge.
Why is it called, ‘Canary?’
Like the historic canary in a coal mine, the Canary app raises an alarm to parents when their teens are in danger. In this case, parents get immediate alerts when a teen is driving while distracted and doing things such as texting while driving, moving at unsafe speeds, traveling outside an area parents have defined as safe or violating curfew.
Can Canary tell whether my teen is driving or a passenger?
No. Canary only knows if your teen is in a car that’s moving at least 12 mph. If you know your teen isn’t driving, you can temporarily disable GPS tracking on his or her device by unlocking it and changing the setting for “Track this device.”
Does Canary know and/or report when my teen reads a text message while on the move?
Canary knows when your teen unlocks their device, which is required to view messages or use their phone.
Does Canary prevent my teen from using the texting or using the phone in any way?
Canary will not disable your teen’s phone or alter its use in any way. Many parents choose to give their teens phones in case of emergencies, and restricting use of the phone in any circumstance is counterproductive to that end. Instead, Canary notifies parents of each dangerous activity so that they can address it with your teen.
Does Canary read my teen’s texts/phone logs? Can it tell me the content of messages?
Canary doesn’t read any of your private data, it merely observes when an event occurs. Canary keeps your teen’s messages and call information private. Canary does not access, report or read any text messages on your teen’s phone.

How does Canary affect battery life?
Although we’ve worked hard to optimize battery life, GPS services can have a major impact. If your teen plugs his or her phone in while driving, little to no change in battery life will be noticed. Canary uses more power while driving, and almost none while stationary. We recommend a car charger or battery case for your child’s phone if battery becomes an issue.
Are there any ongoing fees to use Canary?
No, once you have purchased a lifetime subscription to Canary there are no additional fees or monthly charges.
If I want to know where my teen is right now, will Canary tell me? How?
The Canary app and website can show you your teen’s current location on a map, along with the last time the device reported in.
Is Canary available for iPhone? Android? Blackberry?
Canary is available for iPhone and Android. We have no plans for a Blackberry app at this time.
Does Canary tell me if my teen accesses a Web page, reads a text, reads/sends email or while on the move?
Canary can detect when your teen unlocks his or her phone in order to use any app, including those to text, surf the Web or use email.
Does Canary know when my teen is sending text messages on iPhone?
Due to security restrictions on the iPhone platform, Canary is not able to detect text messages. However, Canary can detect when your teen unlocks his or her phone in order to answer a text or to use an app.
Can Canary tell me when my teen is using other apps?
Canary can detect when your child unlocks their phone in order to use any app.
Does Canary provide a Web portal through which I can access information about my teen’s smart phone usage?
The Canary Website can show detailed information about your teen’s current location and driving infractions. It will not allow you to see your teen’s calls or texts.
How much does it cost to use Canary?
A Lifetime Subscription to Canary is available for $14.99, with no additional monthly fees.
My location won’t update! Are any special settings required to use Canary?
Canary for iPhone DOES require the iPhone to be configured in a specific way. Canary for Android only requires that all Location Services be enabled. The following settings must be correct on any iPhone being tracked for Canary to track and generate notifications.
